The Community Room

The Community Room provides a central location and a large room so that non-profit groups can complete their work in a friendly, yet businesslike atmosphere. It receives regular use not only for library related programs but by many other non-profit groups.

The Community Room has space for ten tables and can seat up to 75. It contains a storage room for tables and chairs and a soundproof divider to split the room in half if needed. Other features of the Community Room include a kitchenette that accommodates light refreshments, a marker board, projection screen, and a cherry-wood podium.

The Community Room was a gift in memory of former longtime Mauston residents Delbert and Leonore Du Mez. The cherry-wood podium was built using funds donated in memory of William “Billy” Walsh, lifetime local resident and historian.

Groups wanting to use the Community Room must review the Meeting Room Policy and have a Meeting Room Reservation Form on file.

Adult Reading Room

The Adult Reading Room located by the main windows overlooks a spectacular view of the Lemonweir River. This focal point of the library contains ample chairs and tables for patrons to use while reading the many magazines, books, and newspapers available. A friendly game of checkers, chess, scrabble or a jigsaw puzzle may also be enjoyed at one of the tables. The Adult Reading Room was a gift of Judge Thomas and Colette Curran, longtime Mauston residents who now reside in Milwaukee.

Children’s Reading Room

The Children’s Reading Room accommodates children during the Story Hour Programs, Toddler Times, and Summer Reading Programs. Furniture in the area was chosen with little people in mind, and loveseats and a rocking chair provide comfortable spaces for parents to read to their children. The Children’s Reading Room was a gift of Loretta Sima, a Lyndon Station resident who made the gift in memory of her brothers James and Edward Sima and their families.

East Side of the Library

Just inside the entrance of the library, bookshelves containing the new arrivals provide patrons easy access to the most recently published, high demand volumes as well as adult and children’s DVD’s.

The tall bookshelves on the East side of the building house the bulk of the adult fiction and non-fiction collections. In addition, the library has continued a Mauston tradition of separating certain books by type: science fiction, westerns, and large print remain segregated for patrons to quickly browse their favorites.

A Young Adult area provides pre-teens and teens a place to enjoy books geared to their age groups. This area has ready access to the reference area, where encyclopedias and other reference volumes assist young adults with school reports. Three study rooms are available in this area of the library as well.

The Heritage Room

The Heritage Room is designed and used for local history and genealogy research. Volunteers work hundreds of hours each year to organize and computerize data to provide easy access for the more than 1000 visitors that use the Heritage Room each year.

The microfilm collection contains census information from 1869 and local newspapers from 1857 to 2000. More recent newspapers are maintained in paper copies. The Heritage Room also contains Mauston High School yearbooks, family histories, and a large number of genealogical volumes donated to the library from the Prosser/McCafferty family.

As interest in family roots and history increases, this room will provide essential information to patrons. Working in conjunction with the Juneau County Historical Society, the Heritage Room is often used by local researches who assist families from all over the country with inquiries about family roots.

The Heritage Room was a gift of Owen Bekkum, and his wife Dorothy Jobs Bekkum who was a long-time resident of Mauston.
