National Sites

Ancestry Library Edition (library subscription version)
...claims to be “the largest collection of family history data online.” Over 900 million names can be searched in their extensive free database and premium subscription database. The La Crosse Public Library currently holds a subscription to the library version of Ancestry.com complete with access to census images for two simultaneous users. Users must be in the library to use this subscription. The free databases (social security death index, etc.) can be searched using the general Ancestry.com link.

Cyndi's List
...consists of over 116,300 categorized genealogy links and is continually being expanded and updated. The easy to browse category list and site descriptions offer an efficient way to search for online genealogical material.

Family Search/Mormon Church
...search for your ancestors in their Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index, Pedigree Research File, or other web-site listings. Founded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Genealogical Society of Utah in 1894, the Mormon Family History Library now maintains this; the largest collection of genealogical material in the world.

Family Tree Maker
...find millions of surnames on web-sites, CD-ROM products and more. The site also contains genealogy related information, software, addresses, services, etc.

Genealogy.com
...offers a “Learning Center” with online tutorials, “My Genealogy.com” as a place to begin your own online genealogical database, a “Marketplace” for locating other resources, and a “Search” area.

Genealogy Home Page
...lists of links based on area of research, including starting points of North American Resources, World-Wide Resources (links by countries & nationalities), Personal Genealogy pages, Maps, Libraries and more.

HeritageQuest

A valuable tool for genealogy and historical research, HeritageQuest allows you to search books, magazine articles (PERSI), federal censuses and Revolutionary War pension files by personal names or place names.

Roots Web
...claims to be the “Internet’s oldest and largest genealogy site.” This site is a gateway to other parts of the RootsWeb project, has a large list of search engines and databases, and up-to-date information on all areas of genealogical interest.

Family History Centers
...a list of local research centers and contact information.

Great Lakes Maritime History
...includes 1,012 images of Great Lakes ships, lighthouses, and other maritime related items. The site is a collaborative project between the following participating institutions: Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning (DLTCL), University of Wisconsin campuses at Madison, La Crosse and Superior, Milwaukee Public Library, Wisconsin State Historical Society, and the Door County Maritime Museum. The project was supported with Library Services and Technology Act funding.

Wisconsin GenWeb ...is a base site where volunteers from each Wisconsin county collaborate and display genealogical information.

Wisconsin Historical Society
...formerly called the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, provides a general overview and search capability to holdings including published, archival, and other collections. A roster of Wisconsin Civil War volunteers has been digitized and is available from this site, as well as a way to obtain copies of the Pre-1907 Wisconsin birth, marriage and death records. A searchable collection of digitized articles from Wisconsin newspapers is also available here.

Wisconsin Library Assoc./WIGLHR
...includes a list of local history and genealogy sites of statewide interest, maintained by the genealogical and local history roundtable of the Wisconsin Library Association.

Wisconsin Pioneer Experience
...a digital collection of diaries, letters, reminiscences, speeches and other writings of people who settled and built Wisconsin during the 19th century. The project has been made available through the partnership of the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries (CUWL) and the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS).

Wisconsin State Genealogical Society
...was founded in 1939 and is “the oldest and largest statewide genealogical organization in Wisconsin.” The organization aims to collect, publish and preserve genealogical information and keep such records open and available to the public. Available online is the Wisconsin Delayed and Affidavit Birth Registrations Prior to October 1907.

Bureau of Land Management
...offers easy access to scanned images of land patents. Searching can be preformed by patentee, legal description, accession number, serial number, etc. Currently, patents issued between 1820-1908 are included. Click on at the very bottom of the page the "search land patents" link.

Death Certificate Indexes Online
...a list of links of online death certificate sites in the United States.

Ellis Island
...searchable database of passenger arrival records at Ellis Island and the Port of New York from 1892-1924.

Genealogy Libraries on the Web
...lists links to genealogical libraries and archives on the web, arranged by country and states.

Immigration History Research Center
...collects and preserves material documenting immigration and ethnicity on a national level.

Library of Congress
...search the American Memory Project which offers digitized images to thousands of primary source documents including maps, or search the Library’s catalog for published materials or family histories.

National Archives
... provides a general overview along with a guide to the holdings and accessibility to records held at the National Archives in Washington D.C., including the NAIL database to help find selected digitized documents in the National Archives.

National Genealogical Society
...is a service organization that "leads and educates the national genealogical community.” This group was founded in 1903 and now boasts over 17,000 members.

National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections ...includes catalog records of archival and manuscript collections in the United States as well as archival societies, preservation, standards, and links to archival manuscript repositories. This site is maintained by the Library of Congress.
